Description

This project is supported by a NIDA R01 grant that was awarded to Dr. Tidey in 2003. Co-Investigators on this project are Drs. Rohsenow and Kaplan. In this study we are testing the separate and combined effects of bupropion (Zyban) and contingency management (reinforcement for smoking reductions) on smoking in people with schizophrenia. After one week on bupropion or placebo, participants come to the lab about 3 times per week for 3 weeks and give urine and saliva samples that are tested, on-site, for cotinine (nicotine metabolite) levels. Reductions in cotinine are reinforced with grocery store gift cards. If this approach appears effective and feasible, we hope to develop it into a treatment program for smoking in people with schizophrenia.
