Description
This study is an investigation of hypothesized mechanisms of action of motivational interviewing (MI) in the context of a randomized, controlled trial of MI conducted in a hospital trauma center. While evidence supports the efficacy of MI for substance use disorders, little is known about how MI works. Process coding is being used to investigate the impact of including a significant other in MI sessions compared with individual sessions. The study will seek to identify specific elements of patient, therapist, and significant other speech and behavior in MI sessions that contribute to reductions in drinking and associated negative consequences.
