Research studies at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies often include community participants.  Currently, we are enrolling participants for the following studies:

All of the studies below have been approved by the Brown University Institutional Review Board.

Non-Treatment Seeking Alcohol Dependent Persons Interested in a Lab Study at 121 South Main St: OS Study
We are seeking heavy drinking men and women ages 21-65 to participate in a NON-TREATMENT lab study at our 121 South Main Street site, examining the safety and efficacy of two marketed medications when consumed with alcohol. Study participation involves receiving medication and weekly visits over a 9-week period with one 30 day follow-up and participation is confidential. The study involves drinking alcohol during three of the sessions. Participants will receive study medication and study-related medical care including physical exam, blood and urine tests, and follow-up at no costs. Free parking or transportation provided if needed. Non-Treatment Seeking Alcohol Dependent Individuals Interested in a Lab Study at 121 South Main St: AT Study
We are also seeking very heavy alcohol drinking men and women ages 21-65 to participate in a NON-TREATMENT lab study examining the safety and efficacy of two marketed medications when consumed with alcohol. Study participation involves weekly visits over a 5-week treatment period, with one 30 day follow-up and participation is confidential. The study involves drinking alcohol during one of the sessions. Participants will receive study medication and outpatient study-related medical care including physical exam, blood and urine tests, and follow-up outpatient visits at no costs. Non-Treatment Seeking Heavy Alcohol Drinking Persons Interested in a Lab Study at 121 South Main St: Mood and Behavior Study We are seeking heavy drinking men and women ages 18-65 to participate in a NON-TREATMENT lab study at our 121 South Main Street site, examining the effects of mood on behavior. Study participation involves 3 visits over a 3-week period. Each session lasts about 2 hours. Participation is confidential. The study involves viewing pictures and listening to music during two of the sessions. Earn up to $100 if study completed!! Interested? We are seeking non-alcoholic participants, ages 21-65, for a research study that is measuring some of the behavioral effects of alcohol, and alcohol levels through the skin. Participants will be tested during 2 sessions (5-6 hours and 6-8 hours) in the research building at the Providence VA Hospital. Participation involves drinking alcohol mixed with fruit juice while wearing a device on the wrist and completing questionnaires. Participants will be compensated $100 cash. Seeking Participants for 7 Day Alcohol Sensor Research Study

The Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University is seeking non-alcoholic participants, ages 21-65, for a research study testing a new electronic device that measures alcohol levels in the blood through the skin. Participants will complete a 6-8hr session at the Providence VA Hospital that involves drinking alcohol mixed with fruit juice while wearing a device on the wrist. Participants will wear the device home for the next 7 days, and then return to the laboratory for a 1hr follow-up visit. Participants will be compensated up to $150. Seeking Participants for Project SENSOR: Supporting Ethanol reductioN using SCRAM and Online Rewards

Brown University is seeking adult drinkers who are interested in reducing or stopping drinking for a research study. Research participation entails wearing a small electronic alcohol monitor on the ankle for three weeks and reporting daily on alcohol and other substance use. This study does not involve treatment for alcoholism. Compensation for daily alcohol skin readings and payment for completing questionnaires over the three weeks is up to $334.

Teens, ages 15-19, are needed to participate in a research study testing the effects of a medication on how teenagers react to the sight and smell of alcohol. Participation involves several visits to our office over approximately 3 weeks and answering questions about emotions and behavior on a handheld computer for 20 days while at home. You must have your parents’ permission to be in this study if you are younger than 18 years old. Transportation is provided if needed. Receive compensation of up to $435 for participation. We are seeking adult cigarette smokers for a research study on the effects of the nicotine patch on cigarette smoking. This is not a treatment program. This study requires 7 visits.
